Haoyuan Yang

Interactive art, immersive media, and practice-led research.

I create interactive installations using sound, moving image, VR, and physical interaction. My work explores how bodies encounter environments and other perspectives, translating movement into sensory feedback and attending to rhythms beyond the human.

My current research direction grows from a question within this practice: how do participants recognise their influence in a shared immersive environment? I am interested in how actions are transformed, combined with those of others, and retained as traces for later encounters.

I am completing an MA in Immersive Arts at the University of Bristol. In 2025, I graduated from the Digital Media Arts dual-degree programme between Xiamen University and the University for the Creative Arts, receiving First-Class Honours for the UCA degree.

01.The Ocean Keeps Time Differently

2026, Team project
Immersive installation

Creative Lead / Interactive Sound Designer / Technical Co-developer

An immersive installation exploring oceanic time and more-than-human temporalities through three projection zones and a Sea VR experience. The work considers possibilities for asymmetrical participation: how visitors might enter an environment whose rhythms are not organised around them.

Presented at the Immersive Projects Showcase, Wickham Theatre, University of Bristol, 28 August 2026.

02.Echo

2024–2025,
Undergraduate graduation project
Three-screen interactive installation

Artist / Interaction Designer / Developer

A three-screen installation in which imitation becomes a chain of interpretation. Audience movement is captured by a camera and read by algorithms, producing mirrored feedback, contradictory text fragments, and an accumulating collective echo pool.

Presented at the ICI Design Season 2025 Degree Show.

03.The Story of the Stone

January–May 2026, Team project
Embodied VR experience

Project Lead / Creative Lead / Sound Designer

An embodied VR experience that reverses the stone-to-human transformation in Dream of the Red Chamber. Across suspension, sedimentation, and petrification, the work explores mineral time, bodily agency, and sensory mismatch through sound and physical resistance.

04.Existence

2023, Individual project
Multi-channel moving image / VR / interaction

Concept / Moving Image / Interaction / Installation

An installation bringing experimental video, 360° VR, and an interactive chat interface onto a shared timeline. Inspired by online chat rooms, Existence stages imagined exchanges among places, animals, and objects, asking how an encounter changes when the human viewpoint is no longer its only centre.
